As of November 2003, there were
10 drug courts in Virginia that had been operating for more than 2 years, 12
that were recently implemented, and 20 that were being planned.
During 2001, 40.6% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Virginia were charged with drug offenses. Half of the drug cases involved crack cocaine. Cocaine is readily available throughout Virginia.
During 2002, the Virginia State Police Pharmaceutical Drug Diversion Unit received 744 complaints of diversion activities throughout Virginia. In response to the complaints, 399 investigations were initiated and 213 persons were arrested on 478 charges. Nine of the individuals arrested were licensed health care providers.
The Virginia Governor's Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (GOSAP) - The purpose of GOSAP is to coordinate prevention activities of various state agencies, review substance abuse prevention program expenditures, and determine the direction and appropriateness of such expenditures. The intent is to develop a more unified approach to prevention in Virginia.
The Virginia Substance Abuse Reduction Effort (SABRE) - The SABRE program directs resources and mandates specific responsibilities to various state agencies to develop initiatives focusing on the treatment, prevention, and enforcement aspects of illegal narcotics.
