Twenty-four drug courts were operating for over 2 years, 3 drug courts were recently implemented, and 3 drug courts were being planned. Since 2001, the number of participants involved in a felony drug court has increased from 567 to 837. At any given time in Utah, close to 5,000 people are participating in a drug court.

During 2002, 15.1% of Federally-sentenced defendants in Utah had committed drug offenses. Approximately 54.7% of these drug offenses involved methamphetamine. Methamphetamine remains the largest drug threat throughout Utah. Methamphetamine is readily available in wholesale quantities. Methamphetamine produced by Mexican criminal groups as well as methamphetamine produced locally is available in Utah.

From January-June 2004, there were 4,792 juvenile arrests and 9,795 adult arrests for part 1 crimes in Utah. During 2003, there were 29,620 part 1 crime arrests in Utah.

Utah Collaborative Interventions for Abusing Offenders (CIAO) Program - The Utah CIAO program targets parolees and probationers with serious substance abuse issues. According to the Treatment Needs of Prison Inmates Study, 69.5% of inmates interviewed were assessed to need some type of alcohol or drug treatment in 2001.
