As of March 24, 2005, there were 182 drug courts in existence or being planned in New York. Forty-three drug courts had been operating for more than 2 years, 85 were recently implemented, and 54 were being planned at that time.

During 2004, there were 17,631 felony drug offenses in New York that were prosecuted in lower courts (town, village, city courts). There were 17,711 felony drug offenses prosecuted in New York upper courts (county or superior) during 2004. There were an additional 1,742 felony drug offenses prosecuted in New York courts in 2004 in which the court was unknown.

During 2002, approximately 45% (45.9%) of the Federally-sentenced defendants in New York had committed drug offenses. Almost 62% of the drug offenses (3,085 offenses) involved marijuana.

During 2004, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported making 2,121 arrests for drug violations in New York. There were 36,809 adult arrests in New York for felony drug violations during 2004.There were 34,385 such arrests during 2003.

New York has two international seaports - Port of New York/New Jersey and Port of Buffalo/Niagara. Drug trafficking organizations often smuggle illicit drugs into New York using maritime vessels. According to the U.S. Customs Service, between $4 and $8 billion generated from illicit drug sales is laundered in the New York metropolitan area each year.
